Family Friendly Beaches of St Ives
As the summer hits St Ives the weather is back with the bright and sunny skies of the South West. Summer is about being outdoors and exploring the beaches, whether it’s a small cove or a vast open beach to stretch your legs out on. The variety in and around St Ives is endless, be it the blue flag beaches we’ve all come to know and love to the rustic rock pooled beaches that offer a unique flavour amongst the sandy beaches.
Lifeguarded Beaches of St Ives
Of course if you’re here in the summer with the family or are out on the waves for most of the day then there’s nothing more reassuring than spending your time on one of the many lifeguarded beaches around the town. With flags displaying where it’s safe to swim and where may be designated for surfing the waves and avoiding any hazards. In St Ives we’re fortunate enough that many of the larger local beaches have lifeguards at hand.
Porthmeor Beach
A little more than a step outside from your luxury self catering apartment in St Ives is the Blue Flag Beach at Porthmeor with its long stretch of golden sands and crisp blue ocean. Lifeguards throughout the busier months between March and October watch the beach so you don’t need to worry about where it’s best to surf! If you’d rather keep your feet on dry land then don’t worry as the beach at Porthmeor is simply one of the best places to sit back and enjoy your summer in St Ives.
Porthminster Beach
Another Blue Flagged beach in St Ives, Porthminster overlooks Godrevy Lighthouse made famous from Virginia Woolf’s ‘To the Lighthouse’. Tended by lifeguards throughout the summer months the beach is the perfect spot to enjoy the Cornish coast as you look out across the bay. Porthminster Beach is a little walk across the harbour front through the town to the crescent shaped beach nestled between the trees.
Gwithian Beach
Back-dropped by sand dunes, Gwithian Beach is a wonderful long stretch of sand where you can watch the surfers in swell of the waves and from the beachside. With a wide variety of sand, dune and rock pool there’s something for everyone to discover. A short drive from St Ives toward Hayle leads you to the beach, which has a National Trust car park to stop in. Gwithian is manned throughout the summer months by lifeguards through to the 30th of September.
